Our Beginner's Guide to New Age Healing: Crystals and Tarot Cards - SpectrumStore SG
Tarot Card Reading

Reiki, crystal healing, chakra healing, tarot reading, sound therapy, etc. Thanks to social media, you might have seen these words popping up more often latelyusually accompanied with beautiful visuals of crystals and gemstones, intricate altars and setups, burning sages, and more. But first...

What is New Age Healing?

New Age Healing is a form of alternative healing therapy that believes in an all-pervading force that all of us humans should ideally be in tune with. Relying on metaphysical properties attributed to crystals and minerals, this form of spiritual self-healing believes that illnesses occur when we fall out of sync with this force. Energy healing, in particular, is a form of healing that is believed to ensure that all seven chakras (spiritual energy centers in the body) are unblocked, allowing our energies to flow smoothly and opening us up to new experiences.

New age practitioners claim that certain crystals and minerals can help realign the body’s spiritual, physical, and emotional energies with a universal force which helps the body combat diseases of the body and mind.

What tools are commonly used?

Plenty of metaphysical tools are used in holistic healing and alternative therapies but for this post, we'll talk about two of our favorites: healing stones and crystals and tarot cards!

1. Healing Stones & Crystals

Healing Stones and Crystals

There are many different types of crystals, each with their own special healing capabilities. Crystals are believed to promote the flow of good energy and help get rid of negative energy; eventually healing the mind, body, and soul.

But whether or not they really produce such powerful effects, we think we can all agree that crystals are so beautiful and nice to look at! A lot of people swear by their healing powers and what can we say... there's only one way to find out! And when you do, make sure to make the most out of the experience by doing it with an open mind.

Different types of crystals

Here are some of the most popular healing stones and crystals:

  • Clear quartz
  • Rose quartz
  • Citrine
  • Amethyst
  • Tiger eye
  • Iron pyrite
  • Malachite
  • Hematite
  • Emerald
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Jade
  • Fluorite
  • Lapis
  • Obsidian

In chakra healing, it is believed that our bodies consist of seven main chakras: Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and Crown Chakra. And like the overarching principles of New Age healing, it is important to have these chakras aligned and "unblocked" to maintain and achieve overall physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

 2. Tarot Cards

When you first hear the words "tarot" or "tarot card reading", chances are you'd start thinking of a lady in robes with her crystal ball, telling someone about their future; just like what we see in books and movies! This is a common misconception, as tarot is more of an intimate self-reflective activity than just fortunetelling.

"Tarot cards do not tell the future; rather, tarot is a tool for spiritual guidance and enables the person receiving the reading to connect to his or her inner wisdom. Tarot readings help a person understand what he or she needs to know about a particular situation. Decks are best used as a tool of inner wisdom and guidance, as readings give a person insight to past, current and future events based on the person's current path at the time of the reading. The cards do not necessarily reveal what will happen, but instead, allow a person to gain an understanding of a situation and determine the best course of action based on what is known and what the cards show." - Gaye Weintraub, owner of holistic wellness company Soul'ed Out via INSIDER
Tarot card decks are made up of 78 cards, each with their own imagery and symbolism. The cards are split into two categories: 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards. Tarot cards were first developed in the 14th century and initially used to play games, until the 18th century where they began to be used for divination purposes.
Tarot readings can be focused on a specific area of life such as love, life, or career; or on a specific question. Tarot card reading is an absolutely sacred process that requires a lot of technique and intuition, but for starters, here is a simplified step-by-step process:

a) Choose your deck.

There are many types of tarot cards out there, but it's important to choose a deck that personally resonates with you. For beginners, we recommend starting with a Rider Waite Tarot Card Deck. Also called Waite-Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith, or Rider tarot deck, it is widely considered the most popular tarot deck for tarot card reading!

b) Have a question or focus in mind.

Your question can be something simple like:

  • What is the biggest obstacle that stands in my way right now?
  • What should I be focusing on right now?
  • What stands in the way of me finding love?
  • When is the right time to make a career change?
  • What actions can I take right now to help improve my life?

c) Shuffle and spread.

Tarot Cards

Shuffle your cards for as long as you need to "clear" and reset them, then start spreading. There are infinite ways to do a tarot spread, but beginners can try single card spreads/one-card tarot pull or a three-card spread.

Three-card spread is great for suggesting cause and effect, sequence of events, and linear paths such as:

  • Past, Present, Future
  • You, Your Path, Your Potential
  • You, Your Relationship/s, Your Partner
  • Situation, Action, Outcome
  • Idea, Process, Aspiration

d) Interpret the symbols using meanings and intuition.

Before trying to interpret your cards, listen to your intuition. What are your first impressions? What kind of emotions or memories do these cards bring? This is the part where you try to establish a deeper connection to your cards and your inner self.

Once you're done with this, it's time to interpret how the cards interact with the question or topic that you previously wanted answers for.

Beginner tarot card readers might first need a reference to help them interpret the meanings behind every card. Luckily, most tarot decks come with their own guidebooks. Otherwise, the internet is a rich source of information!

And just like any other skill, it's important to practice regularly if you aspire to become a better tarot card reader. Once you get used to the cards and develop your reading skills, you can slowly let go of these guide books and resources and rely more on your intuition.

Tarot Card Intuition

We love tarot cards because they help with self-reflection and self-development, as well as decision making and navigating life's uncertainties.
